Theodore Friend is a senior fellow at the Foreign PolicyResearch Institute and a former president of SwarthmoreCollege. His other books include IndonesianDestinies and Between Two Empires: TheOrdeal of the Philippines, 1929-1946, which won theBancroft Prize in American History, Foreign Policy, andDiplomacy.
